Sound Walks

Ethnographic and reflective research carried out in the form of a Sound Walk, inviting people to use listening as a tool to reonnect with our surroundings and self.

A Sound Walk is the practice of listening while walking.
At its core lies the idea of Deep Listening; being fully attuned to the sounds and events happening in one’s environment.

To better understand my own listening habits, and that of others, I decided to plan and facilitate a Sound Walk with myself, and others.

I designed a Listening Kit as part of the Sound Walk. It consists of a listening score, a notebook and pencil, all packaged together in a little bag.

The listening score is kept as open ended as possible; meant to act as a flexible guide on how to listen.

I first conducted the Sound Walk a few times on my own, before facilitating one with five participants from our course. (Wen Soon, Sanna, Jeremy, Geralyn, Janelle)

The collective Sound Walk took place below Lasalle, beginning at the grass patch in front of Rochor MRT.

To end it off, each participant molded their personal response to the walk onto air-dry clay.

There were no rules for how the clay could be shaped; everything was left to personal interpretation.
